Picking a new iPhone can be a bit complicated with the numerous models available. Currently, Apple sells eight different iPhone models on its website, which can be as confusing as buying an iPad. But don’t worry, I’m here to help you navigate through Apple’s extensive product catalog. Whether you’re looking for an iPhone with a long battery life, one that fits in your pocket, or the most affordable option, I’ve got some recommendations for you.
The Best iPhone to Buy in 2023
The iPhone 13 is a great option that offers almost everything the 14 does for $100 less. If you’re paying out of pocket and not getting a carrier deal, the iPhone 13 might be the smartest choice. It has an Apple A15 Bionic chipset, a 6.1-inch OLED screen, wireless charging via MagSafe, and an IP68 rating. The iPhone 14 has a slightly upgraded camera and an additional GPU core, but is it worth $100 more? That’s up to you. The iPhone 13 is fast, takes great photos and videos, and will receive OS updates for years to come.
With the introduction of the iPhone 14, Apple lowered the price of the iPhone 13 to $699, making it the best bang for your buck in 2023.
Best High-End iPhone
If cost is not a major concern or you can get a good carrier deal, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are the top-tier models to consider. They come with upgrades like a new main camera sensor, the A16 Bionic chipset, an always-on display, and Dynamic Island status indicator. These features may not be life-changing, but they are likely to be incorporated in future models. Both phones have ProMotion displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate, offering great performance. The Pro Max has a larger screen and battery, but otherwise, the two phones are similar.
The iPhone 14 Pro is priced at $999, while the 14 Pro Max costs $1099.
Best Small iPhone
Although there is no iPhone 14 Mini, the iPhone 13 Mini is still available and might be your last chance to get a small screen form factor before it disappears from Apple’s retail shelves. The 13 Mini has good cameras, a fast A15 Bionic processor, an IP68 rating, and MagSafe. Its battery life may not be great for heavy users, but it fits easily into your pocket. The iPhone 13 Mini starts at $599.
Best Cheap iPhone
The third-gen iPhone SE, released in 2022, is the least expensive iPhone you can buy, starting at $429. It offers wireless charging, a flagship processor, and an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. However, the smaller 4.7-inch screen may not suit everyone’s preference, and it retains the home button and fingerprint scanner instead of Face ID. The camera system lacks a night mode, and the base model has only 64GB of storage. However, if you can live with these limitations, the iPhone SE offers excellent value for its price.
(Note: There are rumors of an iPhone SE in 2024 with a 6.1-inch OLED screen, so if a larger screen is important to you, it might be worth waiting.)
